Euphemism



1.     Defenition Of Euphemism
Euphemism is a generally innocuous word or expression used in place of one that may be found offensive or suggest something unpleasant ; also : the expression so substituted.
2.     Etymology
Euphemism comes from greek word, meaning “ the use of words of good omen’,which in turn is derived from the Greek root-word, “good,well”and “prophetic speech; rumour, talk”.
3.     Purpose
Euphemism use ranges from a polite concern for proprierty, to attempting to escape responsibility for war crimes.
4.      Formation
·         Phonetic modification
Phonetic euphemism is used to replace profanities, giving them the intensity of a mere interjection.
Shortening or “clipping” the term (“Jeez” for Jesus, “what the-“for ‘what the hell”).
·         Figures of speech
Ambiguous statements ( it for excrement, the situationor “ a girl in trouble” for pregnancy, going to the other side for death, do it or come together in reference to a sexual act, tired and emotional for drunkenness).
Understatements(“asleep”for”dead”,”drinking”for”consuming alcohol”,”hurt”for”injured”,ect.)
Metaphors (“beat the meat” or “ choke the chicken “for masturbation, “take a dump” and “drain the main vein” for defecation and urination respectively).
Comparisons ( “buns” for “buttocks”, “weed” for “cannabis”),
Metonymy (“lose a person”for”coping with a person’s death”, “pass away” for “die”, “men’s room” for “men’s toilet”).
5.     Example of  Euphemism in a sentence
Cougar is the euphemism for a woman who has reached mid
-life, who is single, financially secure and on the lookout for relationships with younger men-as in “prey”-Kerry Gold, Vancouver Sun, 17 February 2001.

“Invigorating” is the euphemism we use most often to describe the chilly waters of the coast, but knowledgeable maine boaters know where to find the warmer, tidal waters just right for a midsummer dip.- Ken Textor, Down East, August 2001.
